About Shea-Oak Log
Shea-Oak Log is a small settlement in South Australia about 10 kilometres north-north-east of Gawler, adjacent to the Sturt Highway between the Barossa Valley and the plains north of Adelaide. The settlement takes its name from an incident in 1844, when Captain Bagot marked the first road from Kapunda to Gawler for bullock drays carrying copper ore by drawing a plough to cut a furrow; when the plough broke, the limb of a shea-oak tree was substituted and left beside the road. It grew as a coaching stop on the route, with an inn operating from 1848, and today the area is known for grain and pig farming and light engineering.
