About Cooran
Cooran is a rural hinterland town and locality in the Shire of Noosa in the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland, located 57.1 kilometres north-northwest of Maroochydore. The name is from the Kabi Aboriginal language, guran or kuran meaning tall, possibly referring to Mount Cooran or tall Moreton Bay ash trees. Cooran Lagoon was used by Aboriginal people for water-lily bulbs and mussels. By 1878 the Half Way Hotel operated at the lagoon on the Gympie to Tewantin coach road. Banana growing was important in the 1920s and 30s and pineapple farms developed after World War II. The heritage-listed Cooran Memorial School of Arts at 14 King Street and Alfredson's Joinery at 28 King Street are notable landmarks. Mount Cooran is a distinctive peak in the landscape. The North Coast railway line serves the town with Cooran railway station.
