About Cowwarr
Cowwarr is a rural village in Gippsland, Victoria, about 27 km north-east of Traralgon, between Toongabbie and Heyfield, in the Shire of Wellington. It grew out of the supply trade to the Walhalla goldfields in the 1860s, when goods were transferred from bullock wagons to packhorses at the point where the track left the plains, and was first known as The Forty Second after the land-selection clause that opened the district. The railway arrived in 1883, and the heritage-listed Cowwarr Butter Factory, built in 1918, survives beside the former line, now the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail.
