About Benalla

Benalla is a city in the Hume region of north-eastern Victoria, on the Broken River about 212 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. The district was first settled in the late 1830s, and the township, originally called Broken River, was renamed Benalla in the mid-1850s. The river was dammed in 1972 to create Lake Benalla, around which lie the botanical gardens, laid out in 1886 and listed on the Register of the National Estate. The town is a stop on the Ned Kelly Touring Route.
