About Anglesea
Anglesea is a seaside town on the Great Ocean Road in the Surf Coast Shire of Victoria, located 110 kilometres south-west of Melbourne and 37 kilometres south-west of Geelong. Originally known as Swampy Creek, the area was renamed Anglesea River in 1884 after Anglesey in North Wales, with the town taking its shortened name shortly after. The town is a popular holiday destination with a patrolled surf beach, the Anglesea River estuary, and Point Roadknight. An open-cut coal mine and power station operated by Alcoa are located just north of the town, and the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983 destroyed over 140 homes in the area.
