About Balwyn North
Balwyn North, also known as North Balwyn, is a residential suburb of Melbourne about 10 km east of the central business district, spanning the Cities of Boroondara and Whitehorse and extending to the Eastern Freeway along the Koonung Creek valley. Its name comes from the estate of an early settler, said to mean 'home of the vine'. The suburb remained largely rural until the 1940s, when postwar housing made it one of Melbourne's archetypal middle-class suburbs, and it claims the site of Australia's first supermarket, opened in 1961. The shopping village on Doncaster Road is a well-known local centre.
