About Karakin
Karakin is a remote coastal-rural locality in the Wheatbelt-coastal transition zone within the Shire of Gingin, about 108 kilometres north of Perth. The landscape is characterised by large rural properties, native Banksia woodland and secluded Indian Ocean coastline, with the Karakin Lakes freshwater marsh system listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia. The Noongar name means home of the karak, or red-tailed black cockatoo, and the lakes are a significant traditional Women's gathering site.
