About Orford (Vic.)
Orford is a town in south-western Victoria, 250 kilometres west of Melbourne and 40 kilometres north-west of Warrnambool. It sits 72 metres above sea level on the banks of the Shaw River, in an area first settled through the Dunmore pastoral run in 1842. A town was surveyed and named Orford in 1856, apparently after places of that name in Lincolnshire and Suffolk in England. The town has several amenities, including a church and a war memorial, and had a small school by 1870.
