About Yalca
Yalca is a rural district in north-central Victoria in the Shire of Moira, about 15 kilometres north-east of Nathalia. The name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word describing the meeting of muddy and clear waters. Settlement began in the late 1870s with farm selections and timber harvesting for the railways, and a small village settlement was established about 1894 as the forerunner of closer settlement farms. Until 1920 the district was described as dairying country, and later as agricultural. A school at Yalca South operated until 1993, when it was combined with the school at Waaia.
