About Strathmerton

Strathmerton is a town in the Shire of Moira in northern Victoria, at the junction of the Murray Valley and Goulburn Valley highways, about 11 km west of Cobram. The district was first taken up by Benjamin Boyd in 1841 as the Ulupna pastoral run, and the name combines 'strath', Gaelic for valley, with Merton, his family home in Scotland. A dairy-farming centre in the Murray Valley irrigation area, it grew around a railway junction with lines to Cobram (1888) and Tocumwal (1905), and was long home to a major cheese factory opened by Kraft in 1950 and acquired by Bega Cheese in 2008.
