About Gunbower
Gunbower is a town in the Shire of Campaspe in northern Victoria, about 40 km north-west of Echuca, on the Murray Valley Highway beside Gunbower Creek. The name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word meaning twisting, a reference to the creek's meanders. Gazetted as a township in 1879, Gunbower is the gateway to Gunbower Forest on Gunbower Island between the Murray River and Gunbower Creek, a Ramsar-listed river red gum floodplain that is the second largest red gum forest in the Murray-Darling Basin.
