About Stawell
Stawell is a town in the Wimmera region of Victoria, 237 km north-west of Melbourne, and the administrative centre of the Shire of Northern Grampians. It began as the goldfield settlement of Pleasant Creek, where gold was found in 1853, and grew around the quartz reefs of Big Hill, being proclaimed a township in 1858 and named after Sir William Foster Stawell, then Chief Justice of Victoria. Stawell is famous for the Stawell Gift, Australia's oldest, richest and most prestigious short-distance footrace, held at Central Park every Easter since 1878, and it remains one of few Victorian towns with a working gold mine.
