About West Footscray

West Footscray is an inner suburb of Melbourne about seven kilometres west of the central business district, in the City of Maribyrnong, on land originally occupied by the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation. Originally known as Upper Footscray, the suburb grew from allotment sales in the 1850s, when Alexander Dove, a Scottish sea captain and first chairman of the Footscray municipal council, took up a large allotment with a thirteen-room homestead. Local streets are named for the British intervention in Sudan, including Soudan Street, Khartoum Street and Dongola Road.
