About Maidstone
Maidstone is an inner suburb of Melbourne, 8 km north-west of the CBD in the City of Maribyrnong, between Footscray and Braybrook. Laid out as a private township in 1858 and named after the town of Maidstone in Kent, England, it grew slowly, with a tramline only reaching the suburb's southern edge in 1921. After World War II the Maribyrnong Migrant Hostel and Housing Commission estates brought rapid development, and Joseph Raleigh's 1843 meat-preserving works on the Maribyrnong River became Pipemakers Park and the Living Museum of the West.
