About Croydon (Vic.)
Croydon is an eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, 30 kilometres east of the city centre in the City of Maroondah. Known originally as White Flats, it was renamed by the Lacey family after Mrs Lacey's home town in England. From the 1870s the district thrived on sheep, beef and dairy farming, sawmills and orchards of apples, cherries, pears, peaches and plums, and it was proclaimed a town in 1912. Croydon railway station opened in 1882, and the suburb's Main Street remains a busy shopping and eating precinct.
