About Whittlesea
Whittlesea is a township about 36 km north-east of central Melbourne in the City of Whittlesea, at the headwaters of the Plenty River. Settled in 1837 with a sheep station on the site, the town was surveyed in 1853 and named, probably after Whittlesey in England, while its post office opened in 1853 as Plenty before being renamed in 1864. Whittlesea grew on dairy farming and a large timber trade, with logs brought from Kinglake by tram to the railway that served the town from 1889 until 1959.
