About Hurstbridge
Hurstbridge is a town and railway terminus on the Diamond Creek in the Shire of Nillumbik, about 28 km north-east of Melbourne. Settled from the 1840s, it takes its name from Henry Hurst, who built the first log bridge across the creek in 1858 and was later shot by the bushranger Robert Bourke in 1866. The railway reached the town in 1912 to carry fruit from its orchards to Melbourne, and the current single-lane bridge over the creek was designed by Sir John Monash. The town holds an annual Wattle Festival each August.
