About Thornbury
Thornbury is an inner-city suburb of Melbourne about 7 km north-east of the central business district, in the City of Darebin, a long thin strip between Northcote and Preston with the Merri Creek on its western side and the Darebin Creek on its eastern side. The name dates from 1850, after a property named for a farm near its owner's English birthplace, and the suburb grew along High Street, where a cable tram ran from 1890. Thornbury Village, at the centre of the High Street shopping strip, is the suburb's commercial heart, and the creek-side trails are popular with walkers and cyclists.
