About Ripponlea
Ripponlea is an inner suburb of Melbourne, about 7 km south-east of the central business district within the City of Port Phillip. It is named after the adjoining Rippon Lea Estate, created from 1868 for businessman and parliamentarian Sir Frederick Sargood and designed by architect Joseph Reed. After Sargood's death in 1903 the estate's land was progressively subdivided, forming the suburb. The mansion and its gardens, including the southern hemisphere's largest fernery, were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1972, opened to the public, and are listed on the National Heritage List.
