About Elsternwick
Elsternwick is an inner suburb of Melbourne about 9 km south-east of the city centre, in the City of Glen Eira on Boonwurrung country. Its name combines Elster, German for magpie, the name of Charles Ebden's house in the district, with the Anglo-Saxon suffix wick, meaning village. The railway arrived in 1861, and the suburb retains the heritage-listed Rippon Lea Estate and Classic Cinemas, claimed to be Melbourne's oldest continuously running cinema, converted from a public hall in 1911.
