About Narracan
Narracan is a rural locality in Baw Baw Shire in eastern Victoria, 14 km south of Moe, in the foothills of the Gippsland ranges. Named after Narracan Creek, the name is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word for a crow. Farm settlement began in 1874, and a railway opened through the Narracan valley to Thorpdale in 1888, carrying coal and produce from the fertile district. The locality retains a primary school and a mechanics' institute hall, and gave its name to the former Shire of Narracan, which existed from 1878 until it merged into Baw Baw Shire in 1994.
