About Coalville

Coalville is a former coal-mining township in the valley of the Narracan Creek in Gippsland, about 7 kilometres south of Moe in the Baw Baw Shire. Black coal was discovered in the 1880s, and after a railway along the valley opened in 1888 the township grew rapidly, with a hotel, stores and boarding houses, at its peak the largest town in the old Narracan Shire. The mines closed by 1898 and the district turned to dairying; the township site is now marked by a reserve and tennis court.
