About Johnsonville
Johnsonville is a small town on the Princes Highway in the East Gippsland region of Victoria, about 19 km east of Bairnsdale and 18 km west of Lakes Entrance. It grew from a crossing place on the Tambo River, where a punt began operating in the 1870s, and is named after John Johnson, who owned the local Swan Reach run in the 1850s. Settlement intensified in the 1880s with a timber mill, post office and school, and the town became a minor river port.
