About Wooragee
Wooragee is a rural village in north-east Victoria, about 8 km north-east of Beechworth. Its name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word for a peppermint-scented tree. Gold was found there in 1852 during the Ovens goldfield rushes, and the Beechworth to Yackandandah railway opened through the village in 1891 before closing in 1954. A local school dates from 1862.
