About Beechworth
Beechworth is a historic town in north-east Victoria, on the edge of the Victorian Alps and the Ovens goldfields, where gold was discovered in 1852. It quickly became the administrative centre of the region, with 20,000 residents by 1857. Explorer Robert O'Hara Burke served as police superintendent there in the 1850s, and Ned Kelly faced more than 40 trials and hearings in the town's 1858 courthouse, including his committal hearing. Beechworth is known as Victoria's best-preserved gold rush town, with 32 National Trust listed buildings.
