About Tallangatta
Tallangatta is a town in north-eastern Victoria on the Mitta Arm of Lake Hume, about 38 km south-east of Albury-Wodonga along the Murray Valley Highway. Founded in the 1870s as a rail gateway for the Mitta and Upper Murray valleys, it grew as a service centre for the surrounding farming district, with a butter factory operating for much of the 20th century. Its most distinctive chapter is that the town was moved 8 km west in the 1950s to make way for the expansion of Lake Hume, an event captured in the 1988 book Slates and Suet Puddings. The High Country Rail Trail now follows the old railway line through the town.
