About Glenrowan

Glenrowan is a town in the Wangaratta local government area of Victoria, about 236 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 14 kilometres from Wangaratta, at the foot of the Warby Ranges. Settled in the late 1860s and named for farmers James and George Rowan, it is famous as the site of Ned Kelly's last stand, where the bushranger was captured in June 1880 after a police siege at the Glenrowan Inn. The town now marks the event through its heritage precinct and visitor attractions beside the Hume Freeway.
