About Greta (Vic.)
Greta is a rural district in north-east Victoria, located east of Benalla in the Rural City of Wangaratta. The district originally contained four villages all called Greta at various times, with the original township on Fifteen Mile Creek now known as Greta West. The area gained historical notoriety as Kelly country — the family of bushranger Ned Kelly lived here, and Aaron Sherritt was based in the district. Surveyed in 1852 when roads to the Beechworth goldfields passed through, Greta was once a watering hole for diggers and teamsters before the railway through Benalla in 1873 redirected traffic away.
