About Chiltern
Chiltern is a town in north-eastern Victoria, between Wangaratta and Wodonga in the Shire of Indigo. It grew from a survey in 1853 into a gold-rush town after the discovery of gold by John Conness in 1858-59, when miners sank deep wet-lead shafts up to 400 feet. It is the birthplace of Prime Minister John McEwen, and its many National Trust-classified buildings include the Grape Vine Hotel, home to the largest grapevine in Australia. Nearby Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park contains the Yeddonba Aboriginal Cultural Site, with ochre rock art thought to depict a thylacine. The town was once on the main Melbourne-Sydney road and is now bypassed by the Hume Freeway.
