About Avenel
Avenel is a town in the Shire of Strathbogie in central Victoria, on Hughes Creek between the Hume Freeway and the railway line to Wodonga, about 16 km north-east of Seymour. The area was a pastoral run from 1838 and the township grew around a ford on Hughes Creek, being surveyed in 1859 after a bridge was built. Avenel is known as the childhood home of bushranger Ned Kelly and retains the sandstone Hughes Creek bridge, a former court house and other historic buildings.
