About Alexandra (Vic.)
Alexandra is a town in the Shire of Murrindindi in Victoria, 130 km north-east of Melbourne, at the junction of the Goulburn Valley and Maroondah highways. Settled in the 1860s as a gold-mining centre at Red Gate Diggings, it was renamed in 1867, possibly after Princess Alexandra or after three gold miners named Alexander. Timber and farming later shaped the town, and its railway, opened in 1909, is now part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail. Lake Eildon, 12 km to the east, and the Cathedral Range State Park are major attractions for visitors.
