About Yapeen

Yapeen is a rural village on Campbells Creek, near the Midland Highway about 9 km south of Castlemaine in central Victoria. The creek was named after William Campbell, who took up the Strathloddon pastoral run in 1840. Gold discovered nearby in the early 1850s created the Pennyweight Flat diggings and a settlement that grew through the rush, later working reefs such as the Champion Reef. The village was named Yapeen in 1861 from an Aboriginal word meaning 'green hill'. Relics of the era, including waterwheel abutments in the gullies, survive in the surrounding bush.
