About Prairie (Vic.)

Prairie is a rural locality in the Shire of Loddon in northern Victoria, located about 208 kilometres from Melbourne and 56 kilometres north of Bendigo on the flat plains of the wheat belt at approximately 106 metres elevation. A railway siding opened on the Piangil line in 1884, and the area has supported wheat and sheep farming since, shaped by World War I soldier settlement schemes and post-war mechanisation. The Prairie Nature Conservation Reserve protects remnant native grasslands including habitat for the critically endangered plains-wanderer, one of Australia's most elusive birds.
