About East Bendigo
East Bendigo is a residential and industrial suburb of Bendigo in north-central Victoria, about two kilometres north-east of the city centre. It grew around the Victorian Railways workshops, built from 1911 and for many years a major employer, together with livestock saleyards, a flour mill and meat-freezing works that served the district's railway junction. The suburb's primary school operated from 1916 to 1998. East Bendigo's northern part, near White Hill, was part of the Bendigo goldfield, and the White Hills Chinese Diggings preserve some of the best remaining examples of early Chinese and European mine shafts in the area, worked from the 1850s into the 1930s.
