About Skipton

Skipton is a town in the Western District of Victoria, on the banks of Mount Emu Creek on the Glenelg Highway, 166 kilometres west of Melbourne and 52 kilometres south-west of Ballarat. It straddles the Shire of Pyrenees and Corangamite Shire, and is known as the 'home of the platypus'. First settled as a pastoral run in 1839 and surveyed for a township in 1852, it was named after Skipton in Yorkshire, England, an old English name meaning 'sheep town'.
