About Craigie (Vic.)
Craigie is a rural locality and former mining township in the Shire of Central Goldfields in Victoria, about 8 kilometres south-east of Maryborough. Gold was discovered in a nearby gully in October 1854, and the village grew from that activity. The name comes from the Craigie Parish, surveyed about 1855, and the locality was linked with nearby Majorca in a borough proclaimed in 1864. Its government school opened in 1870 and closed in 1941, and the district is now farmland with many old gold workings.
