Allendale

About Allendale

Allendale is a former gold-mining town north-east of Creswick in central Victoria's historic goldfields region. It is thought to be named after a village in Northumberland, England. The town grew rapidly from the early 1880s when deep-lead gold mining along the Spring Hill lead reached the area, at one point having ten hotels, a school, two churches and a railway station on the Creswick to Daylesford line, and it was also known as Ristori Town after one of the larger mines. The town was built largely through the efforts of developer Thomas Dibdin, who sold hundreds of identical miners' cottages. As the mines closed, Allendale shrank to the quiet village that remains today, one of the few of the goldfield's townships to survive.
