About Preservation Bay
Preservation Bay is a rural locality on Tasmania's north-west coast, about 16 km north-west of Ulverstone between Penguin and Sulphur Creek. First settled by Europeans in 1852, it takes its name from an 1845 storm in which three settlers' whaleboat was nearly swamped; they camped overnight before sailing on to Emu Bay. The locality fronts a 700-metre north-facing beach between low rocky bluffs, and George Bass and Matthew Flinders are believed to have taken on fresh water here in 1798.
