About Penguin
Penguin is a town on the north coast of Tasmania, on the Bass Highway between Burnie and Ulverstone at the base of the Dial Range. First settled in 1861 as a timber town, it became a significant port shipping timber across Bass Strait to Victoria during the gold rushes. The town was named by botanist Ronald Campbell Gunn after the little penguin rookeries found along the coast.
