About Oatlands (Tas.)
Oatlands is a historical village on the shores of Lake Dulverton in the centre of Tasmania, on the Midland Highway between Hobart and Launceston. Named by Governor Macquarie in 1821, it was developed as a military and convict settlement and has the largest number of colonial sandstone buildings of any town in Australia, most of them built by convict labour. Landmarks include the convict-built courthouse of 1829 and the Callington Mill of 1837, the only working windmill of its type in the Southern Hemisphere.
