About Parattah
Parattah is a small township in Tasmania about 6 kilometres southeast of Oatlands. It grew up around the main railway line between Hobart and Launceston, built in 1876, and was long known as Parattah Junction, where the Oatlands branch line joined the main line from 1885 until 1949. The name is an Aboriginal term meaning ice and cold. The restored railway station, once the highest on the Tasmanian rail network and a halfway stopping point for the Tasman Limited, now houses a small museum. The village retains its original general store, a Tudor-style hotel and historic churches, and a nearby farmhouse was once home to Hudson Fysh, one of the founders of Qantas.
