About Trevallyn
Trevallyn is a residential locality about 3 km west of Launceston, sitting above the confluence of the Tamar and South Esk rivers and named after a property bought by the settler William Barnes in 1824. In the 19th century it was known as the captain's suburb, because sea captains and professional men lived on the hill overlooking the harbour and walked down to their ships. The locality takes in the Cataract Gorge Reserve and Trevallyn Dam, which supplies the city's hydro-electric scheme.
