About Launceston
Launceston is a city in northern Tasmania, at the confluence of the North Esk and South Esk rivers where they form the River Tamar estuary, about 45 km from Bass Strait, and the second city of the state after Hobart. Established as a garrison from 1805, it is one of Australia's oldest European settlements, named after Launceston in Cornwall. The city is known for the Cataract Gorge, carved by the South Esk, and claims a string of firsts, including the first Australian city lit by hydroelectricity in 1895. It was named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2021.
