About Fern Tree
Fern Tree is a rural and residential locality about 9 km south-west of Hobart, on the lower slopes of Mount Wellington. The name comes from the Dicksonia antarctica tree ferns that grow in the area. Fern Tree began as a postal station on the road to the Huon Valley, through which Hobart's water supply also passed, and is now a recreation area with the Pipeline Track walking route. The Fern Tree Tavern, first built in 1861, was rebuilt after the 1967 bushfires.
