About Coonawarra (SA)
Coonawarra is a small town north of Penola in South Australia, best known for the famous wine region named after it. The wine region is renowned for cabernet sauvignon grown on its narrow strip of terra rossa soil lying over limestone, and the first vines were planted by John Riddoch at Yallum in 1890. The Bindjali people were the traditional custodians of the area, and the word coonawarra is reported to be their word for honeysuckle.
