About Merriton
Merriton is a locality beside the Augusta Highway between Crystal Brook and Redhill in South Australia's Mid North. The settlement began as a private subdivision of the Hundred of Crystal Brook and was named in the 1870s by John Millar, a former member of parliament, for George Merrit, president of the local cricket club. The Old Merriton Road Bridge, an 1879 wrought-iron bowstring truss bridge across the Broughton River, is one of only five such bridges built in South Australia and is now preserved as a footbridge.
