About Laura (SA)
Laura is a rural town in the Mid North region of South Australia, on the Horrocks Highway 12 kilometres north of Gladstone and 40 kilometres east of Port Pirie. Explorer Thomas Burr was the first European to visit the district in 1842, and when the town was surveyed it was named for Laura, the wife of pastoralist Herbert Bristow Hughes. Laura is known as the home of Golden North ice cream, manufactured there since 1923. The endangered spiny daisy, thought extinct, was rediscovered near Laura in 1999.
