About Kilkenny

Kilkenny is an inner north-western suburb of Adelaide in the City of Charles Sturt, South Australia, located 7.5 kilometres northwest of the Adelaide central business district. Named after Kilkenny in Ireland reflecting the influence of Irish immigrants who arrived as assisted migrants during the mid-19th century, the township was formally established in 1849. The land was originally occupied by the Kaurna people. The suburb straddles Torrens Road where it joins Regency Road and contains the Armada Arndale shopping centre and Kilkenny railway station on the Grange and Outer Harbor lines. Highly multicultural, 59.1 percent of residents are Australian-born with significant Vietnamese, Indian and Italian communities. The present boundaries include the former suburb of Challa Gardens created in 1950.
