Woodville is a residential suburb of Adelaide in the City of Charles Sturt, South Australia, located approximately 8 kilometres northwest of the Adelaide central business district. Before colonisation in 1836 the Kaurna indigenous people lived on the land. The first building was an inn called the Halfway House in 1839, believed to be named because it was roughly halfway between Adelaide and Port Adelaide. The town was laid out in 1849 and by 1853 had 24 houses, a forge and a wheelwright's shop. The heritage-listed Church of St Margaret of Scotland was built in 1855 by John Bristow Hughes and named as a compromise between his wish to honour his late wife Margaret and the Bishop's insistence on a saint's name. The Woodville Town Hall with the Star Theatre opened in 1927 and the suburb is home to Woodville High School which opened in 1915 and the Woodville Football Club in the SANFL.
