About Oakden
Oakden is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, located approximately 12 kilometres northeast of the city centre within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield. The area, formerly part of Gilles Plains, was developed as the Regent Gardens housing estate in 1992 on former Department of Agriculture land and officially named Oakden in 1993. The name derives from Patience Oakden, the maiden name of the wife of Osmond Gilles, South Australia's first Colonial Treasurer. Notable landmarks include Heritage College Adelaide, James Nash House, the Salvation Army Corps and Community Centre, and former Hillcrest Hospital buildings. The suburb gained national attention during the Oakden scandal of 2016-2017, when the Makk and McLeay Nursing Home was closed amid allegations of resident mistreatment.
